The research shows that folks with MS can have some issues with cognition sometime during the course of their disease. I think that this is the one potential symptom which scares me the most. So my small attempt to ward off cognition dysfunction is to exercise my brain. I have recently taken up doing crossword puzzles and I have come to the conclusion that I need lots more practice. I thought I had a good vocabulary but some of the puzzles have had me so stumped that I had to go look up the answers.
Anyways...I thought that I could have an on-going feature category here of some brain exercises....fun little activities to get the brain working. Not sure if such things are proven to help any (anybody know of any research?) but it couldn't hurt and they are fun.
Here is my first attempt. You can derive a word or phrase from the following. Maybe I will post the comments when someone gets them all correct.
I will give you one example:
Mind
Matter (the answer is Mind over Matter

just to let you know...xanga rob has commented already and has gotten 9/10 of these right! i will see first if there are any other guesses.
I've been filling in 1099s and my brain is mush. I'm relieved that someone got here first and did so well.
I'd like to say I got all of them right, but I'd be lying through my teeth.
My mother did cryptic crosswords, but Alzheimer's eventually robbed her of that ability.
I'm a crossword addict. The more you do them, the easier they become. Husband and I have really funny complimentary knowledge/trivia bases, so together we can usually solve any of the NY Times puzzles, where alone we would each struggle.
Another help is to work the puzzle for awhile and then leave it. When you come back to it, you'll be amazed at how you quickly "get" things that had you stumped.
Your ten puzzles are hard! I get 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 10...maybe 5 and 6... Stumped by 4 and 9.
Fun!
Hi Merelyme, my first visit to your site. You are so correct about depression and perhaps it is also related to autoimmune diseases.
You seem so young to be stricken with MS but hopefully as the Scientists keep working on it they may come up with an all-time cure ! I do hope so.
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis which struck me 15 years ago. People can be so unkind, and in many ways, ignorant about these awful diseases , putting them down to a few aches and pains etc. adopting the "Just pull yourself together attitude. Not funny nor helpful !
Hey! I`m having a serious rant here, but you know what I mean !
Happy 2008

Cognitive dysfunction is probably one of the scary symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis which is why I am still working. I don't do crossword puzzles or sudoku like my wife does. She is trying to get me started. I am not good at this. :)
xanga rob...you missed but one...pot 8 o's potatoes. heh!
Potatoes! Geez. I got every other one, but I had a good time working on it. I love word problems.
I do the crossword and the word jumble every day. I've always enjoyed word puzzles but I do them now to keep my mind working. I've noticed that when I have a really hard time with the puzzles, my MS symptoms are worse. I'll have a few days where I can't answer anything, then I get back into the swing of it.
Oh, and I cheat. Yeah, I know that's not right, but I do it anyway because I will never remember what an old French coin is called. I go to oneacross.com. Very cool site.
I'm terrible at crosswords, I can't even do the ones in the coloring books lol
i used to be a crossword lover and now can't stand them.
but i like other activities that make my brain work. have always been a lover of solitaire games.
there's ample research that shows that exercising your brain helps with brain degeneration due to age, alzheimer's and i think also parkinson's so why wouldn't it help with MS? something to look up.
a book i love is "pumping ions". great brain food in there.
I got most of them.
i'm with rob except #6, i see it as: foreign eyes... good stuff to ponder on ;) lol
Potatoes.... *sigh* of course. lol
These puzzles have always made me angry, and now, with MS, angry & scared.
(no whimsical "O Henry" ending to this one, it just stops)
Oh, okay, I will probably come back & try your next mean test...when it hurts you could charge us more!
