paper church

My son who has autism...loves churches. I think that not a day goes by that he doesn't draw or create a church. He makes them out of paper and tape. I have seen them in the fireplace. I have seen them drawn and laid out upon my kitchen floor. He makes crosses out of legos and tapes them to the bathroom door. He lines up chairs for pews.

And before you say anything....no...we are not particularly religious...at all...here. This is just something my son does. He has been particularly fascinated by this theme for as long as I can remember.

So yeah...I think maybe it is time I listen more attentively to what my child is innately feeling.

I am excited about exploring the topic of spirituality. I have many posts to come.

Dear Merelyme,

The church is so lovely. Maybe one day your son can teach me to make this craft :-) I love art and craft.

I am glad to read your posts on spirituality and to see you exploring this. This is very much a matter of my heart. For me it is not a matter of being religious or not. Actually, my relationship with God is a very real and personal one. My life was completely changed after I know the Lord Jesus Christ and His love in laying down His life on the cross for me. He is the one who continues to sustains and comforts me through my struggle with bipolar disorder. I have so much to tell of His mercies to me and I will post more as I journey on with Him and bipolar :-)

I enjoyed your posts as you write from your heart. Take care.

Warm regards,
Nancie

I learned alot through my own kids. Its amazing how much we can learn through them.

The way that our spirits seek sanctuary from life's din ... is something that your son's church-building speaks to me. Requiring no verbalization, his spirit seems to be saying "I have found sanctuary."

I am reminded of a portion of one of my favorite hymns "... whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well with my Soul."

God's blessings to your son ... and You.

Once you find spirituality you will also discover the meaning of "peace amidst the storms of life" and it will make a big difference.

yes, a good thing he has something that keeps his mind active, yet calming... who knows, he may be the next 'great teacher'! :)

I remember one young autistic boy that was 'way into big trucks.

He'd draw them all the time, right down to the last lug-nut!

Nice church, BTW...

I love his creativity. I think a lot of people with brain disorders have a strong artistic ability. I have always had a lot of creativity.

So when I was diagnosed with Schizo-affective I wasn't surprised to learn that creativity is something that many with mental health conditions have.

There are so many "mentally ill" artists out there--and in history.

As for spirituality, I am so thankful for my Buddhist practice. It has really helped live with my condition and manage it.

Especially meditation, it's like another medication but without any side-effects. But there are good side-effects like relaxation and peacefulness.

Just stopping by to say hello. I hope you are doing well. And the detail and symplicity in your son's church is pretty neat.

Only when we realise that we are not all living in the same world, do we realise that there is more to the world & the universe than what 'we' 'see'

His church is quite lovely. Do you ever tour churches with him? I can imagine him in the great cathedrals of Europe.
