I am in the mood to talk about something light and fun tonight....
I was recently looking at a Psychology Today article which talked about how the average sexual encounter lasts from between 3-10 minutes.
And in April of this year, an Associated Press article on the MSNBC site stated that: "A survey of sex therapists concluded the optimal amount of time for sexual intercourse was 3 to 13 minutes."
But then I read from several different sources including California sexologists William Hartman and Marilyn Fithian, (who reported that they monitored over 20,000 female orgasms) that it takes an average of twenty minutes for women to reach orgasm.
So you do the math.
I also read that on average it takes a man on average 2-5 minutes to reach orgasm.
No wonder the Pointer Sisters extolled the virtues of having a man with a slow hand:
"I got a man with a slow hand
I got a lover with an easy touch
I've found somebody who will spend some time
Not come and go in a heated rush
I've found somebody who will understand
I've found a lover with a slow hand"

I find this all to be fascinatingly informative. I like to study the matter in an effort to double check the math and further science.

Well, if I can get 30+ minutes of a really good foot/leg/back massage, then 3-10 minutes for a sexual encounter sounds about right.
Sounds like nature designed men and women for trouble.

I wish I was a participant in this survey. I never had a problem with orgasms and no it never took 20 minutes, maybe 20 seconds if I was turned on. Vive la multiple orgasm!!

Also, for men who think that the female orgasm "doesn't matter," it has been scientifically proven that it's actually in a man's best interest to make a woman cum because, when she does, the muscular motions created by orgasm create what is known as the "upsuck" phenomenon---drawing sperm into the uterus and increasing changes of conception.

39 years married to the same woman and we do not time out our sex. What I do is wait until she sounds like an ou, ou, bird before we do the deed!
This is the trouble with using all those scientific words for very unscientific things. Optimal, average, whatever... when that slow hand reaches out in the dark, when it's good, when it's right, I don't think anybody's counting ;)

I agree that foreplay is the key. For my wife and I we foreplay for about 10 minutes or so. Then on to the main dish for another 10-15 minutes. So your figure of about 20-25 minutes is where we fall into.
Though like one commenter stated we don't pull out the stop watch. It kinda kills the mood I'd imagine.
