What makes you get up in the morning?
I am not talking about your alarm clock. I am talking about what gives you a feeling of purpose and meaning so that you want to get up and start your day?
For me it is the tabula rasa concept of the blank slate. I can pretend to wipe the past days away and begin again with new promise. Doesn't really work that way but I can imagine it. I personally am grateful for the demarcation of days with nights of dreaming and unconsciousness. We always have a new day to begin again.
And of course...my kids. I get out of bed in the morning for my kids. I need them as much as they need me I suppose.
So what's your story morning glory?

I believe I can always find good things in everyday in spite of what might be bad. That gets me going.
If we concentrate only on the bad we will never get up each day.
Very good question!
On the surface, it's usually doctor appointments or PT appointments that get me out of bed. But I am going to observe myself for the next few days to see what makes me WANT to get out of bed. Thanks for the brain tickler. Now I'll probably not be able to get to sleep thinking about the answer....
well, you know ..
something very prosaic..
my full bladder .. :)
but there's also the hope of a good day, of course..
I like having the quietness of the morning greet me.
i get up pretty early, enjoy the quiet with my coffee... then ensure my son gets up so he can get to work on time, around 6:30
I pondered your question as I engaged in yoga this morning. I do yoga for the the standard reasons, but more specifically it is a tool. I wake up at ridiculous hours that range between early, earlier and insanely early. I use yoga to relax my mind, to center myself in the swirling thoughts that pull me out of bed at hours that we shouldn't know exist in our conscious mind. At 4:30am today I quelled my brain chatter with a look at your blog, some forced yoga and thoughts about what got me out of bed this morning. I guess for me the question is "how long was i able to stay in bed this morning?". That's my gauge for how I'm doing. Thanks for directing my brain to more productive thinking.
You always come up with such neat topics, merelyme!
Me? I LOVE morning time. Fortunately I'm on a med that acts as a stimulant, so I get up around 5:30 - eagerly.
I love the quiet time, sitting with my coffee, mulling, journaling, reading a bit, praying a bit. In the winter I don't turn the heat on until later. My cat lies on my lap and keeps me warm. He loves those quiet times along with me.
For me it is my husband. When things were really bad for me, I'm not sure what I would have done without him.
I think I can honestly say that blogging gets me going some mornings. I usually write after work, and publish when I go to work. So, going to work is also my excuse for writing.
I get up because I have to pee and I want my morning coffee. Oh how I love my coffee!
I get up because I have to, because lying around in bed is not an option.
My dog Boo Radley is the best alarm clock I have ever had. He wakes me without fail, everyday at 5:30am.
Hi MM,
It took me ages to realize that Merelyme was not your actual name!
More a description - inventive.
I am not as dim as I sim - just sometimes.
I really liked your poems. I liked the thought provoking nature of your blogs.
What gets me up in the morning are the things I love to do. I dance a lot - that does sit for me. With suitable acknowledgment of where you are in life at the moment, I am certain that the regular exercise through dancing also enables me to roll out of bed; and wake up fairly quickly.
Ta for sharing,
Hugh
Simple. We only have one bathroom in the house and with two women in the house I have to get up at 6am to get out of there as quick as possible... :-)
This morning it was my kitten, Musette, who got me moving. I took advantage of her playful enthusiasm for the day to distract me from the doctor's appointment which truly 'made' me get going.
Also I prefer to be greeted by a quiet, sunlight peaceful household. It takes awhile before I'm ready to interact with other humans.
Found you through Whim....
Interesting question and I like your answer. I usually wake up hung over by the worries of the day/night before...but I'm going to try and create my own tabula rasa, and see if that doesn't help.
Thanks.
What makes me get up everyday? The idea that staying in bed is a choice, too...which will ultimately change my life as well.
