Writing about Creativity (when I am not feeling too terribly creative)

One of my passions is writing and since my MS I do still enjoy writing but sometimes my mind is so weary I can hardly think straight. Like now. lol I do think it is important to get the mind whirring as best as we can. Sometimes you gotta just kick start it is all.

Was thinking about creativity today and my recent lack of it and wrote this:

I am a collector of quotes. Whenever I see a good quote, I jot it down on a post-it. I have a zillion of them scattered about my house.

This one is about creativity.

"There is a theory that creativity arises when individuals are out of sync with their environment. To put it simply, people who fit in with their communities have insufficient motivation to risk their psyches in creating something truly new, while those who are out of sync are driven by the constant need to prove their worth. They have less to lose and more to gain." ---Gary Taubes

Interesting isn't it?

This quote was was in this book I once read, called Strange Brains and Genius: The secret lives of eccentric scientists and madmen.

So what do you think? Could this be true at some level?

I once was watching a show about creativity which talked about the 3B's: Bed, Bath, and Bus. They say a lot of folk get inspired while in bed, the bath or shower, or riding the bus, train, or driving in their cars.

I know for me I get a lot of ideas upon waking up. I have a little notebook so I can write those ideas down before they drift away. Sometimes I look at my chicken scratch later in the day and wonder what in the heck I was thinking. I too get ideas when I am in the shower and preparing for my day. And I have definitely come up with some grand schemes whilst going for a long drive. I suppose any setting where your mind can be free to wander is prime creativity landscape.

Other inspirations for me include:

Music: Try listening to different types of music and see how this influences your writing or art.

Watching films or movies. I find that after I watch any film or show with emotional depth, I am more driven to write.

Going for a walk or bike ride. I have thought of the idea of having a small tape recorder so I could record my ideas as I ride or walk. I tend to lose the train of thought once I stop my motion.

Reading other people's writing. This is why the blog world is so great in that you have so many other writers and artists to read and view and to gain new perspectives.

So how about you? What gets your creative juices percolating?

I collect quotes too!

I don't know if I agree with what Gary Taubes said. Not that I know what fuels creativity. I have no idea what gets mine going. I just get inspired.

Reading other people's blogs, or just wandering around the internet gets my curiosity and creativity simmering. I also love the book 'a Whack on the Side of the Head.' And NPR. And wandering through toy stores or libraries.
Oh, and a glass of wine or two frees my mind to play!

Very unique advice. Simple but doable. I like the idea about going for a walk and talking your thoughts in tape. I think lots when walking...sometimes it seems like tiny conversations in my head.

Right now I seem to be lackluster in my writing as well. I can't seem to get the right words out. I do find delight reading others...

One of my favorite quotes.

"Money may not buy happiness, but you can use it to buy a really big boat and sail right up next to it."

Heh ... fine line between genius and insanity.

Indeed, I tend to do my best thinking in the bathroom.

i try to follow the prqactice laid out in "writing down the bones," every day, just write for a pre-set length of time (15- 20 minutes) without giving any thought to what it is you are writing. write the same phrase or word over and over if that's all your mind gives you. just put pen to paper and write. i may never read it again, but it is practice, like practicing anything else. and sometimes, an idea or a line or a whole paragraph appears that i can pursue. i have notebooks full of lousy writing.

I don't totally agree with the quote. I can see where it might fit a person in an artistic employment field where there is the need for approval for marketability. I've been a painter all my life (pre MS) and never worried about fitting in or being out of synch unless it was for employment or commission.
Since MS, creative ideas aren't so much the problem as motivation, skill level and staying on task.

For me, it's about any place where there are lots of people and lots of things to look at ... coffee shops, grocery stores, farmers markets. It doesn't have to be anything exotic ... just sit in a corner and watch how people would interact with one another. Get to thinking about what the backstory is in their relationship, how they met, what tensions they may have, why they're still around one another ... your brain then starts to magically color between the lines on its own.

..the beach!, the ocean, the sky, Love, sadness, intimacy, the deepest part of the emotions...things that will give inspirations to others...hope, Love, caring, friendship.
And when I'm in Love...drawing the other nearer to me, intimacy, bed room talk, fantasies we live out...poems to swoon!

I'm naturally creative; in my websites, photography, videography, carpentry, In my Love.

I hope to see more of your poetry!
